This year, one of my goals has been to read more.

So I thought it would be fun to show you which books I am currently reading through right now.

Pretty Simple Painting by Joy Laforme

If you have been following me for the past year on Instagram, you may have noticed that I LOVE to break out this book to help keep me inspired when I want to play with watercolor. Usually I gravitate towards painting watercolor florals, but what I have loved about this book is that I began to experiment with gouache and what it is like to add multiple layers with amazing detail. The book is perfect for beginners and has THE CUTEST watercolor & gouache projects. Trust me. It should definitely be on your list of art books to try out.

Check out my Instagram feed if you want to see all of the paintings that I created from this book.

Harry Potter Watercolor Magic: 32 Step-by-Step Enchanting Projects by Tugce Audoire

Now my family and I LOVE us some Harry Potter (Ravenclaw here!). So when I received this book as a Christmas gift a YEAR ago (I know, I know. What can I say…I collect books), I was ecstatic. The book includes 32 watercolor projects that are sketched on actual watercolor paper and vary in difficulty (simple, intermediate, and advanced). The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and I am really excited to try this one out.

How to Win Friends & Influence People: The Only Book You Need to Lead You to Success by Dale Carnegie

As a business owner, I am always looking for great books that can help me grow and become a better entrepreneur.

First published in 1936, “How to Win Friends & Influence People” by Dale Carnegie has stood the test of time. He gives some amazingly simple tips and advice on how to become a more effective leader, make great first impressions, and how to become successful by just getting things done. Carnegie gives multiple stories and historic examples to back his claims. And on more than one occasion I found myself thinking, “Oh my goodness! That is so simple but makes such a difference.”

The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth am I Here For? By Rick Warren

If you are feeling lost and without a purpose, this is the book for you. Honestly, even if you know your purpose and feel like you have lost your way through this crazy thing we call life, this book is still for you.

“The Purpose Driven Life” is set up as a 40-day spiritual journey that dives deep in why you are alive and what God’s plan is for you.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this one and have just started reading it with my daughter as a morning devotional.

The Martian by Andy Weir

Did you know that I got my degree in Chemistry? Yup. At one point in my life I had dreamed of becoming a chemist and working for NASA. But you know. Life, dreams, and passions change and I became a self-taught artist.

But I still have a heart for the sciences and a good fiction book. The Martian by Andy Weir is exactly that. What an AMAZING piece of science fiction! And who would have guessed that I got into this one because my daughter was reading it for her freshman literature class.

The book tells the story of the astronaut, Mark Watney, being stranded after an emergency evacuation of his crew on the planet of mars. With no way to communicate, Mark uses his amazing engineering skills to do all he can to stay alive.

Now I will warn you. The first three chapters are heavy on the science (totally geeked out, for sure) but once you get past those, it’s a non-stop masterpiece of human ingenuity, wit, and survival.

And there you have it, sweet reader!

All of the current books I am reading at the moment!

Comment below if you have read any of these and let me know if there are any REALLY great books you would add to my list for this year.
